Field work on which this paper is based was carried on in 1969 and 1970 under the auspices of the Summer Institute of Linguistics in cooperation with the Fundação Nacional do Índio and the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro. Valuable aid for data organization was provided by a concordance made on the IBM System/360 computer at the University of Oklahoma by the Linguistic Retrieval project of the Summer Institute of Linguistics and the University of Oklahoma Research Institute, funded through National Science Foundation grant GS-3180.
