A description of how third person narrative discourse in Hixkaryana is organized in terms of the use of specific grammatical devices to signal the pragmatic status of participants. These grammatical devices signal the topicality of participants and correlate closely with semantic phenomena to divide up the discourse into distinct units. This analysis is based on three origin myth texts, one of which is presented in interlinear format as an appendix.
